COB,
Thanks for the welcome aboard!
I'm a bit rusty at the controls after nearly 34 years, but I'll do my
best!
Had to take the tour of the USS Pampanito (SS-383) on the Internet to
get a feel for the boat again!

RIG FOR MORE TURNS

TO ALL HANDS:
Based on RUNNER'S latest position report (the one with the rising
sun), our navigation calculations indicate this is going to be a close
one. We have lost most of our comfort margin. We can get a few more knots
out of the old girl though.
CHENG: Shift water aft and transfer the emergency booze from the
fwd tubes to the aft tubes. Run the low pressure blower on all main ballast
tanks for at least 10 minutes each watch. Blow safety if you need to.
O'B AND THE ER GANG: Tie down the overspeed trips on all four ME.
Spike the fuel tank on service with Haig and Haig.
MAN: See if we can get 1250 KW from all four generators. Permission
granted to exceed 760 engine RPM (The Haig and Haig should help)
FTR: Make sure all fwd tubes are dry.
ATR: Flood all tubes aft.
OOD: You and the lookouts hunker down. Don't let your heads get
into the slipstream.
ALL HANDS NOT ON WATCH: Stand by to get out and push.
Any other recommendations as to how we can get the old Hog to go
any faster will be gratefully accepted. Don't ask me, just DO IT!

Chief Jackson, supervise shooting all Mk 14 and 16 weapons.
Leave tubes dry and dewater WRT's. Make sure bilges in both FTR
and ATR are dry.
Off trim manifold operator. rig a water hose from port side crews
mess at #3 NFO that has been converted to a fresh water tank, and drain
the tank to the storeroom under radio
Have maneuvering start the drain pump and continue pumping/draining
until empty.
All off watch personnel form a working party from the Ftr and start
passing every thing not necessary to the conning tower to be tossed overboard.
Everything!! Navol monitors, strongbacks for the hatches, mine table supports,
emergency planes/helm indicator batteries, LORAN A (keep LORAN C) dismantle

be needing.

If I can keep the squirt cans filled with lube oil and keep a constant
flow on the main motor bearings we should be able to pick up a few more
turns. We should have tubes 7&8 loaded with water slugs. At the last
min., with our lightened load, 2 water slugs fired together should push
us up 2 more knots for a short spurt. Might just be enough.

Sure would like to know how RUNNER made all those miles in a little
over 24 hours. At least we had an explanation for our SOA (C5-As go pretty
darned fast).
I'm not sure how official these posts are because we haven't seen
anything from the CO or XO (No offense Patty and Harry, just need a little
confirmation that's all). This could be a trap.
If they are official, what do you think? Should we declare this
thing a dead heat and steam into Perth together (HOGFISH leading the way
of course) as a show of unity?
We're presently 5 miles from the harbor entrance making 28.7 knots.
Gotta slow down pretty quick, so let me know what you want to do.

I would say we proved our point. The diesel boats have a place in this
new navy. Without the benifit of all the Runners super technology we gave
them a run they had to fight for. We used our ancient skills instead of
push buttons.
We showed that us old timers are still a cut above the rest. Lets
go for a show of unity and go in together. I would be proud to down a few

1. Respectfully recommend that we acknowledge the humble defference
of the Hale-Bop RUNNER Maru to "our age" and "your senority" by gracefully
allowing the HOGFISH to arrive at the sea bouy FIRST.
2. Further recommend that HOGFISH lay to in the vicinity of the
sea bouy until RUNNER's arrival (that appears imminent)and make our harbor
entrance together.
3. This will publicly display to our gracious hosts in this beautiful
city that the U.S. Navy's Submarine Force works with unity, regardless
of age or technology.
4. "Perth ANDREW" DOESN'T HAVE A VALID e-mail ADDRESS!
5. The COMM Officer is standing by to send your condolences to RUNNER

They soon will be close aboard. The message can be sent by signal

Hey troops it has been a blast. Haven't had so much fun "with my
pants on" in a long time. You're all great submariners, always resourceful
and a great sense of humor.
Thanks for letting me ride along. Hey, I even made Chief!.
Thanks to all.

CONGRATS TO ALL

To the crew of the USS Runner: Congratulations to a job well done.
I dunno how we did it, SOA figures 425kts, but maybe I'm not cleared for
that info. In any case, it was a pleasure waiting for the Hogfish to show
up and man the rails as she led us into Perth. Capt John and XO Roy, Hogfish
COB and RMdiv, and all others who made this trip interesting with your
posts,thanx. I really enjoyed it.
Well Done. The Runner is currently covered with a huge tarp as modifications
are being made, that trip was a little slow. As soon as the merchant ship
"GLORIMAR" arrives with our package from Bangor, we will get underway for
our next voyage.
Interested Hogfish.......?????
