Leo D. Rodgers, EMC(SS)
CHIEF OF THE BOAT
Chief Rodgers has been on Menhaden since
September of 1969, and is the boat's 3-M Coordinator. He entered the Navy
in October of 1956 from his home town of Marshall, Texas. After attending
recruit training, EM "A" School, and Submarine School, Chief Rodgers served
on the USS Raton (SS-270). He has also had duty on the USS Queenfish (SS-395),
USS Perch (APSS-313), USS Redfish (SS-395), and the USS Spinax (SS-489).
His one tour ashore was as an Instructor at EM "A" School in San Diego
for three years.
Chief Rodgers is married with three children
and enjoys woodworking, hunting, and camping.
James A. "Dusty" Rhodes, TMC(SS)
"Dusty" Rhodes entered the Navy in June
of 1948, and reported aboard the Menhaden in June of 1969. He is the Leading
Chief in the Weapons Department.
After entering the Navy from his home
town of Bradenton, Florida, Chief Rhodes served on the USS Neosho (AO-143).
After attending Submarine School, he saw duty on the USS Medregal (SS-480),
the USS Bream (SS-243), and served two tours of duty ashore at the Steam
Torpedo Shop at Pearl Harbor and as an Instructor at the ASW School in
San Diego.
Of special note is the fact that Chief
Rhodes was a member of the Navy Pistol Team in 1965 and 1967. He is married
with two children, and enjoys hunting, fishing, and target shooting.
Forest R. Mizell, ENC(SS)
Chief Mizell has been on Menhaden since
September of 1967, and is the Leading Engineman on board.
He first entered the Navy in September
of 1952 from his home town of Richmond, Virginia. After Recruit Training,
he attended Commissaryman "A" School and spent his first enlistment as
a Cook at the Naval Station in Clarksville, Tennessee. He reenlisted in
the Navy, after being a civilian for one month, and served as an Engineman
on USS Coucal (ARS-3). He has since seen duty at the Submarine Base in
Pearl Harbor, USS Sterlet (SS-392), USS Sea Leopard (SS-483), and the Naval
Air Station at Corpus Christi, Texas.
Chief Mizell is married, and in his spare
time enjoys fishing, golf, and camping.
Richard L. Fort, ENC(SS)
Chief Fort reported aboard Menhaden in
May of 1970, coming from the Naval Weapons Station at Concord, California.
He is the Leading Auxiliaryman.
Chief Fort entered the Navy in February
of 1955 from his home town of Bellgardens, California, and subsequently
attended Recruit Training and Submarine School before reporting aboard
his first submarine, the USS Carp (SS-338). Since then, he has served on
the USS Capitaine (SS-336), USS Mapiro (SS-376), USS Macabi (SS-375), USS
Charr (SS-318), USS Snook (SSN-592) and USS Assurance (MSO-521). He has
also served overseas at the Naval Air Station in Rota, Spain.
James G. Hoffman, EMC(SS)
Chief Hoffman has served on Menhaden since
September of 1968, and is the Leading Electrician on board.
He entered the Navy in August of 1956.
After attending EM "A" School, he was stationed at Kwajalien, Marshall
Islands. Then, for 14 months, he served aboard the USS Uhlman (DD-687).
After Basic Submarine School and Submarine Electrical School, he temporarily
served aboard the USS Spikefish (SS-404), then qualified on the USS Quillback
(SS-424). After Nuclear Power School, Chief Hoffman served on the USS Scamp
(SSN-588). After EM "B" School, he served aboard the USS Simon Bolivar
(SSBN-641), then the USS Argonaut (SS-475). After he attended Instructor's
Training, he had shore duty as an Instructor at the Basic Electricity and
Electronics School in San Diego for two years, then reported aboard the
Menhaden.
Chief Hoffman is married with two children
and spends his spare time hunting, and as a backyard mechanic. His home
town is Minot, North Dakota.
Lester A. Westervelt, HMC(SS)
"Doc" Westervelt has had a varied and
interesting career since entering the Navy in November of 1946. After serving
at Naval Hospitals in Mare Island and Oakland, he served overseas at the
Civilian Administration Unit at Truk for three years. From there he spent
two years at the Naval Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas, before going
overseas again with the Marine Corps in Korea from 1953-1955.
Chief Westervelt returned to the Naval
Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, for four years before attending Submarine
School and serving on the USS Wahoo (SS-565) and the USS Tang (SS-563).
Since then he has seen duty at the Marine Corps Recruiting Station, Albuquerque,
New Mexico, the USS Hissem (DER-400), and the USS Redfish (SS-395) before
reporting aboard the Menhaden in September of 1968.
Chief Westervelt is married and enjoys
all sports.
Richard A. McGuire, STCM(SS)
Chief McGuire reported on board Menhaden
in March of 1971, and is Leading Sonar Technician and OPS Department LPO.
Chief McGuire joined the Navy in May of
1950 and, after attending Sonar "A" School, served on USS Soley (DD-707),
attended Basic Submarine School, served on USS Cusk (SS-348), USS Blackfin
(SS-322), USS Skipjack (SSN-585), and USS Will Rogers (SSBN-659). He has
also served as an Instructor at ST "A" School, Fleet ASW School, San Diego,
California.
Chief McGuire is married, has four children,
and enjoys playing golf and bowling.
J. M. Hicks, RMC(SS)
Chief Hicks reported onboard on June 15,
1970. He enlisted in the Navy from his home town of Temple, Texas, in October
of 1955. Schools attended while in the Navy are RM "A," RM "B," On-Line
Crypto and Teletype Repair.
Tours of duty by Chief Hicks include USS
Fulton (AS-11), USS Tusk (SS-426), USS Entemedor (SS-340), USS Kamehameha
(SSBN-642) before reporting aboard Menhaden. He has served two tours of
shore duty, one at NAVCOMSTA SAN FRANCISCO, and STAFF COMSUBPAC.
Chief Hicks is married, has two children,
and enjoys hobbies of bowling, golf, fishing and hunting.
William D. Hood, ETC(SS)
Chief Hood reported aboard Menhaden in
July of 1970. He is the Assistant 3-M Coordinator and Leading Electronics
Technician on board. He enlisted in the Navy in September of 1961, attended
ET "A" School, Basic Submarine School and Nuclear Power School before reporting
aboard USS Snook (SSN-592). Other tours for Chief Hood have included USS
Constellation (CVA-64) and the Fleet Training Center at Newport, Rhode
Island, before reporting aboard Menhaden.
Chief Hood's wife, Carolyn, resides in
San Diego taking care of their four-year-old son, Robert, and awaiting
the arrival of number two sometime in October.
